It has been a somewhat cooler and slower spring and some of
the fertility which was applied early may have been lost, mainly nitrogen. It
is time to assess the situation and apply extra fertility so that crop growth
and development is not compromised. The rate of side-dress would depend on the
crop and growth stage, but generally would be in the range of 20-40 kg per
hectare. Nitrogen fertilizer is best applied on the side to prevent crop injury.
